International Translation Day

by The JADE

Today is a meaningful day for all translators and interpreters, it is the International Translation Day.

September 30 celebrates the feast of Saint Jerome (347–420), who is considered the patron saint of western translators. He is mainly known for his endeavour of translating the Bible into Latin from the Greek manuscript of the New Testament. Since 1953, the International Federation of Translators (FIT) has been promoting the celebration of St. Jerome’s Day in different ways. In 2017, the United Nations (UN) started to acknowledge the role of professional translators in connecting nations, and fostering peace, understanding and development, hence the official declaration of September 30 as the International Translation Day.

Relating to the development of global situation, a unifying theme for the International Translation Day is chosen each year. For 2021, the theme is “United in Translation”. While people are kept apart due to the COVID-19 pandemic for more than a year, language works as the medium of communication, and translation functions as a means of cultural exchange. During the pandemic, translators and interpreters also work as frontliners by translating news and information, which has led to the unity of the world. The power of translation is impactful; not only does it overcome language barrier, but it also brings countries and people closer.

We, at the JADE, would like to express our greatest appreciation to all translation professionals on this special day. Best wishes to all translators and interpreters around the world, and may you stay grounded to your initial aspirations. Happy International Translation Day!
